Free City of Danzig (1923-1928)

This serie of banknotes belongs to the period of history of the city of Danzig in which, as in other German-speaking territories, there was a huge rise of the Nazi party, from 0.7% in the elections of 1927 to 50% in 1933, led by Albert Forster. At this time the repression of the political opposition took place (introducing laws such as the 1933 authorization or those of Nuremberg) and, due to German economic aid, the Danzig florin was devalued by 40%. Tensions with Poland increased but with the signing of the German-Polish Pact of Non-Aggression (1934), relations improved and the local Nazi party stopped carrying out anti-Polish actions. The situation changed after the Munich conference (1938) in which German foreign minister J. von Ribbentrop demanded the incorporation of the Free City of Danzig into Nazi Germany and thereafter the tension did not stop increasing.
