A bit about Berlin
A bit about Berlin
Two towns were founded around the year 1200 (Berlin and Cölln), which were united in 1307 forming a single city that retained the name of Berlin. The city was elected capital of the Margravate of Brandenburg in 1415 (one of the many states of the Holy Roman Empire). Untill 1762, East Prussia (and with it Berlin) was in Russian hands (since the Seven Year's war), when Russia withdrew it in a peace treaty (because of the admiration that Peter III processed towards Frederick the Great of Prussia). Berlin became the capital of the German Empire in 1871 when Prussia achieved the unification of Germany (after defeating Austria in the Seven Weeks was and the Second French Empire in the Franco-Prussian war), increasing the population and becoming a cultural reference and an architectural and financial center worldwide. It was the capital of Nazi Germany too and, after being destroyed during the World War II, it was divided in two by the Berlin Wall: West Berlin (belonging to the German Federal Republic) and East Berlin (part of the GDR). After the fall of the GDR, Berlin became again the capital of all Germany.
