belongs to the region North Rhine-Westphalia, in the northeast of the region.

The urban are is drained by Werre river. It is surrounded by Teutoburg Forest, a very dense forest.
It was the capital of the small Principality of Lippe from 1468 until 1918. From 1919 to 1947 Detmold was the capital of the Free State of Lippe. Then Lippe was incorporated into the new German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. This city hosts one of the most visited monuments in Germany, Hermanndenkmal (monumento to Arminius, chieftain of German Cherusci and leader of the Germanic in the Batle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD).

In the upper and down part of it, it appers the sentence that is in the sword: "Deutschlands Einigkeit meine Stärke - meine Stärke Deutschlands Macht" which means German unity, my strength - my strength, Germany's power.
