Gandesa

Gandesa is a village in the east of Spain inhabited by 2,999 people nowadays. It belongs to the region Catalonia, in the south of the region.

A bit about Gandesa

Gandesa is the headquarter of the Regulating Council of the Denomination of Origin Terra Alta, a wine.
In a place called Coll del Moro, there is an ancient Iberian archaelogical site from tribes that lived before Roman times. The villages has a church with unusual and interesting sculptures on the Romanesque porch.Gandesa's coat of arms has a very interesting origin. In 1319 there was a royal wedding between the son of James II of Aragon and the daughter of Ferdinard IV of Castile. After the ceremony, the prince escaped from the church and he left his glove there. The old winery of Gandesa is one of the most beautiful in Catalonia, in Modernisme and Noucentisme style, designed by Cèsar Martinell. Gandesa was scenary of carlist wars (a XIX century civil war) and during XX century Spanish Civil war. It was besieged by Republic's army during Battle of the Ebro (now the village hosts a museum about that battle).

This banknotes worth 10 céntimos was first circulated in September the 17th of 1937. On the main side it can be seen a draw of the old winery of Gandesa and over it, a farmer and grapes. In the left there's a text in Catalan in with is said that this banknote can just be used locally. The rest of the banknote is surrounded with geometric decoration. On the other side of the banknote appears Gandesa's coat of arms.

 Around it appears a ribbon mentioning the local council. In the coat of arms there is Catalan flag (senyera, with stripes), the glove, the Republican walls (instead of the royal crown) and the text "Molt lleial, heroica i inmortal" that means very loyal, heroic and immortal. There are two 10's and surrounding with geometric elements.As for the digital watermark, it has no watermark. The size of this banknote is 10.2 cm x 5.5 cm.
