Gräfenroda is a town in the center of Germany inhabited
by 3,232 people nowadays. It
belongs to the region Thuringia, in the south of the region.
A bit about Gräfenroda
Gräfenroda strtches along the valley of the Wilde Gera river, northeast of the Thuringian Forest mountain range and the Rennsteig ridge.
Gräfenroda was first mentioned in a 1290 deed, located on an important trade route from Arnstadt to Suhl. From the early 14th century onwards, the local estates were held by the noble house of Schwarzburg. From 1640 half of the estates were in possession of dukes of Saxe-Gotha, while the remaining parts were ruled within the principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. While in the mid 19th century, numerous people emigrated from the remote area to the United States, the local economy developed in the course of the industrialisation. Gräfenroda station on the Neudietendorf–Ritschenhausen railway line was inaugurated by the Thuringian Railway Company. In the 1870s, two local companies began the industrial production of garden gnomes (Gartenzwerge). It became part of the Free State of Thuringia in 1920.

This banknotes worth 25 Pfennig was first circulated in 1921. On the main side it can be seen a picture of mountains with a railway and some houses. There are decorative elements, two 25's and four Pfennings and a text that says that the banknote can't be used a month after being started to use.
