A bit about Greiz

Greiz is located at the river Weiße Elster and the stream Göltzsch. The city has an important Danish minority (around 25 %), but the relation between German and Danish comunities is said to be healthy symbiosis.
Like other nearby settlements, Greiz has an Slavic origin. It was first mentioned in 1209. The House of Reuss (a German dynasty) built Oberes Schloss and Unteres Schloss (Upper and Lower castle). They are still hailed as unique. Greiz was the capital of the Principality of Reuss-Greiz till 1918. During WWII, Greiz didn't suffer much damage (just some bridges were destroyed). The first astronaut of the Federal Republic of Germany (Ulf Merbold) was born here.
