A bit about Münster

Münster is located on the banks of the river Aa.The city of Münster was founded in 793 by Ludgero of Friesland, as a small monastery located near a Saxon town. It grew rapidly and in 803 the construction of the cathedral began, naming first bishop to Saint Ludger (805). In 1040 Henry III the Black was the first emperor to visit the city, which later became part of the Hanseatic League as the bishopric of Münster. In 1534, the Anabaptists became masters of the city in the Rebellion of Münster, with preachers like Jan Matthys predicting that the place where the Parousia would take place would be Münster, establishing a kind of Christian communism, succeeded by Jan van Leiden. Later the bishop of Münster besieged and controlled the city. The city recovered and in 1580 it was already the main city of Westphalia in the Hanse. The Peace of Westphalia was negotiated in Münster and Osnabrück, ending the Thirty Years 'War and the Eighty Years' War. In 1780 the University of Münster was founded and in 1820 the city was conquered by Prussia, being the capital of the Prussian province of Westphalia. During the Second World War, the bishop of the city, Clemens August Graf von Galen, was very critical of the Nazi government and the city was severely bombed, being later reconstructed.
