A bit about Sankt Georgen an der Gusen

Sankt Georgen an der Gusen was mentioned for the first time in 1367, being between the 16th and 17th century a protestant municipality with many followers of the shepherd Martin Aichinger. Since 1873 the train from Linz to Summerau passed through the village. During the Second World War, the population was chosen as the headquarters of the DEST company (exploitation of the slave labor in the quarries and later in the industries of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp complex), housing the Gusen sub-camp since 1944, one of the most brutal subfields of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. During the postwar period it developed its municipal structure and, due to the proxmity to the Danube cycling circuit and the Donausteig, tourism is gaining importance.
