This serie of banknotes belongs to the period in which the Belgian franc was progressively replaced by the euro. In
this period the prime minister was Jean-Luc Dehaene of the
Christian-Democratic and Flamenco Party, which carried out a reform in
1993 in which Belgium became totally a federal state. In the 1999
elections, the traditional parties of the government suffered a
significant defeat by the Dioxin affair, leading Guy Verhofstadt to
form a government of liberals, socialists and greens, which shortly
after announced a gradual elimination of the seven nuclear reactors of
Belgium and a fifth constitutional reform, with the agreements of
Lambermont and Lombard. There are banknotes of 100 Belgian
francs, 200 Belgian francs, 500 Belgian francs, 1,000 Belgian francs,
2,000 Belgian francs and 10,000 Belgian francs.

was first circulated in 1995.
On the main side left it can be seen James Ensor, Belgian painter
who participated in the avant-garde movements of the early 20th
century, influencing expressionism and surrealism. In the right appears a part of his paint, Masks and Death, a fan and a feathered mask with a big nose. The rest of the banknote has the written value of the banknote and the name of the National Bank in Flemish (Nationale Bank Van Belgie), plus a gap for the watermark and a 100.
On the other side of the banknote appears the Ensor's pain The Baths of Ostend, a Japanese paper engraving that represent bathhouses. There is a 100, the written value fo the banknote and the name of the National Bank in French (Banque Nationale de Belgique) and German (Belgische Nationalbank), with the rest of the banknote completed with decorative elements. This banknote has James Ensor portrait and his signature as digital watermark and a security thread too. The size of this banknote is 13.9 cm x 7.5 cm.
