North Korea (1947-1959)

This serie of banknotes belongs to the period of the end of WWII, when Korea was divided into two states: North Korea (communist) and South Korea (capitalist), and Korean war. These banknotes are written in Hanja (Korean using Chinese characters) instead of the usually used Hangul, created in 1443 during the Joseon Dynasty (King Sejong the Great). There are banknotes of 15 chon, 20 chon, 50 chon, 1 won, 5 won, 10 won and 100 won.

20 chon (貳拾錢)

This banknotes worth 20 chon was issued in 1947. On the main side, you can see a text saying value of the banknote in Hanja alphabet. In its upper part appears written ticket bank of the central authorities of North Korea (北朝中央鋟 行券). In two opposite corners there are two 20's and in the others, the written value of the banknote. The rest of the banknote is fulled with decorative elements.

On the other side of the banknote, it can be seen in the middle the written value in Hangul alphabet () with two 20's, one in each side. In the upper part can be seen written the official name of the country, Democratic Korea (민주조선).  The rest of the banknote is fulled with geometric and decorative elements. This banknote has no digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 8.5 cm x 4.5 cm.

50 chon (五拾錢)

This banknotes worth 50 chon was issued in 1947. On the main side, you can see a text saying value of the banknote in Hanja alphabet. In its upper part appears written ticket bank of the central authorities of North Korea (北朝中央鋟 行券). In two opposite corners there are two 50's and in the others, the written value of the banknote. The rest of the banknote is fulled with decorative elements.
On the other side of the banknote, it can be seen in the middle the written value in Hangul alphabet () with two 50's, one in each side. In the upper part can be seen written the official name of the country, Democratic Korea (민주조선).  The rest of the banknote is fulled with geometric and decorative elements. This banknote has no digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 10.4 cm x 5.4 cm.


1 won (일원/壹圓)

This banknotes worth 1 won was issued in 1947. On the main side it can be seen a peasant with a hoe, a worker with a hammer and factories chimneys which symbolize the "bright future" in the nation, moreover the written value of the banknote in Hangul alphabet, a stamp and a text saying that the emition of banknotes is backed with the country's authorities. In its upper part appears written ticket bank of the central authorities of North Korea (北朝中央鋟 行券).
In two opposite corners there are two 1's and in the others, the written value of the banknote. The rest of the banknote is fulled with decorative elements. On the other side of the banknote it can be seen in the middle Paektu Mountain, a volcanic mountain in North Korea and China border, tallest mountain in the peninsula and a mythologic place for all Korea, with two 1's, one on each side. In the upper part appears the written official name of the country, Democratic Korea (민주조선) and in right and left, the written value in Hanja and Hangul alphabet, completed with decorative elements. This banknote has no digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 11.4 cm x 6.1 cm.


5 won (오원/伍圓)

This banknotes worth 5 won was issued in 1947. On the main side it can be seen a peasant with a hoe, a worker with a hammer and factories chimneys which symbolize the "bright future" in the nation, moreover the written value of the banknote in Hangul alphabet, a stamp and a text saying that the emition of banknotes is backed with the country's authorities.
