20 Portuguese escudos (vinte escudos)

banknote worth 20 escudos
was first circulated in July the 27th of 1971.
On the main side right it can be seen a statue of Garcia de Orta, 16th
century Portuguese scientist and doctor, pioneer in tropical medicine, in the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of Lisbon. In
the right there's also a 20, in the center the written value of the banknote
and the name of the National Bank (Banco de Portugal), plus the Portuguese coat of arms; in the left there's a gap for the digital watermark and a 20.
The rest of the banknote is fulled with decorative elements. On the other side of the banknote it can be seen the market of Goa (Portuguese India) in the 16th century, place where Garcia de Orta carried out his investigations. Moreover there are two 20's, the name of the National Bank and decorative elements. This banknote has Garcia de Orta as digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 13.5 cm x 6.6 cm.
50 Portuguese escudos (cinquenta escudos)

was first circulated February the 1st of 1980.
On the main side right it can be seen young Maria I, queen of Portugal between 1777 and 1816, second longest reign in Portuguese history. In the right there's also a 50, in the center a gap for the digital watermark and in the left, another 50, the written value of the banknote and the name of the National Bank (Banco de Portugal), plus the Portuguese coat of arms.
The rest of the banknote is fulled with decorative elements. On the other side of the banknote it can be seen the town of Sintra and its palaces (near Lisbon) in 1507. Moreover there are also two 50's in opposite corners, the name of the National Bank and decorative elements. This banknote has Maria I of Portugal as digital watermark.
