Portugal (1964-1968)

This serie of banknotes belongs to the period in which Portugal was in the Portuguese Colonial War and the last period of Salazar as the leader of the dictatorship. There are banknotes of 20 Portuguese escudos, 50 escudos, 100 Portuguese escudos, 500 Portuguese escudos and 1,000 Portuguese escudos

20 Portuguese escudos (vinte escudos)

This banknote worth 20 escudos was first circulated May the 26th of 1964. On the main side right, you can see Santo Antonio (Antonio de Padua), priest of the Franciscan order, preacher and theologian, venerated as a Saint of the Catholic church. In the center it can be seen Portuguese coat of arms, as well as fish, the written value of the banknote and, in the upper part, the name of the National Bank in Portuguese (Banco de Portugal). In the left it can be seen a space used for the digital watermark.
The rest of the banknote is fulled with decorative elements. On the other side of the banknote appears Santo Antonio's church in Lisbon, placed where he grew up. It is the most loved church by lisboetas. You can see two 20's, in the upper part and decorative elements. This banknote has Santo Antonio's portrait as digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 13.6 cm x 6.5 cm
