This serie of banknotes belongs to the period in which, during a trip to Beijing by King Norodom Sihanouk, Prime Minister Lon Nol and Prince Sisowath Sirik Matak staged a coup d'etat, forcing Vietnamese communists to leave Cambodia; the king opposed the coup and began a civil war, which began as a war between North Vietnam and Cambodia, but as it progressed, increased support for the Khmer Rouge (Cambodian Communists), who ended up winning the civil war and establishing the Democratic Kampuchea, led by Pol Pot.
There are banknotes of 5 riels, 10 riels, 100 riels and 500 riels.
The rest of the banknote is decorated with decorative elements, ears of corn and black pepper. On the other side of the banknote it appears architectural details and the entrance of the Silver Pagoda of the Royal Palace, in Phnom Penh, next to palm trees and banana trees. Moreover it has the written value of the banknote and the name of the National Bank in Cambodian and French (Banque Nationale du Cambodge). This banknote has Buddha of Bodhisattva Lokesvara, in Angkor Thom, as digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 18 cm x 9.7 cm.
500 riels (ប្រាំរយរៀល/cinq cents riels)
This banknotes worth 500 riels was first circulated in 1970. On the main side left it can be seen a man plowing with two zebu. In the upper part appear two 500's (៥០០) and in the central there's the written value of the banknote and the name of the National Bank in Cambodian (ធនាគារជាតិនៃកម្ពុជា).
