This serie of banknotes belongs to the period of French colonization, in which French Algeria was under the collaborationist regime of the Vichy France of General Pétain and Operation Torch was carried out, in which in November 1942 the armies of the United States and the United Kingdom (together with the of free France) liberated and recovered Algeria and Tunisia. There are banknotes of 5 Algerian francs, 20 Algerian francs, 50 Algerian francs, 100 Algerian francs, 500 Algerian francs, 1,000 Algerian francs and
5,000 Algerian francs.
5 Algerian francs (cinc francs/خمسة فرنك)
This
banknote worth 5 francs was first circulated in November the 16th 1942. On
the main side center it can be seen an Algerian woman with a laurel wreath and leaves from a phoenix palm tree.
In the upper part appears 1,000, the written value of
the banknote and in the upper part, the name of the National Bank in French (Banque de l'Algérie), in the lower left corner a 5 and the rest of the banknote is completed with a text in Arabic saying that counterfeiting banknotes is punished with penal labour.
On the other side of the banknote there's a big 5 with the written value of the banknote in Frenc and Arabic. In the upper part appears again the name of the National Bank in French and in the lower one, a text saying that counterfeiting banknotes is punished with penal labour and the rest of the banknote is completed with decorative elements. This banknote has no digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 9.9 cm x 6 cm.
