This serie of banknotes belongs to the period during the civil
war that engulfed various factions, producing many displaced and exiled
(mainly non-Muslims), in which the remaining members of the Soviet
Union and Tajiks elected Emomali Rakhmonov as president, who attacked
Dushanbe and the ex-Communists were rehired with the power. After
the capture of Dushanbe, the government of Rakhmonov attacked
Kofarnikhon, which was quickly subdued, having a ceasefire since 1997
with the opposition parties. Emomali Rajmonov, who has been
accused of ethnic cleansing during the civil war against the rest of
Tajikistan's ethnic groups, was re-elected in 1999 in a peaceful
election, denounced as fraudulent by the opposition. There are
banknotes of 1 Tajik ruble, 5 Tajik rubles, 10 Tajik rubles, 20 Tajik
rubles, 50 Tajik rubles, 100 Tajik rubles, 200 Tajik rubles, 500 Tajik
rubles and 1,000 Tajik rubles.
