This serie of banknotes belongs to the period after
the coup of October 10, 1935, the referendum for the monarchical
restoration on November 3, 1935 (approved with 97.9% of voters) and the
Regime of August 4, the dictatorship of Ioannis Metaxas under the
reign of George II, a conservative, authoritarian and anti-communist
government inspired by the fascist government of the Kingdom of Italy,
but which never became a totalitarian state. There are banknotes of 50 drachmai,
100 drachmai and 1,000 drachmai.
On the other side of the banknote there's a laureate woman with an olive tree branch, holding the relief of Eleusis. Moreover there are two 50's, the name of the National Bank and in the lower part, the sentence Έκδοσης Πρώτα (that means first issue), all surrounded with decorative elements. This banknote has a laureate Greek young man as digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 17.4 cm x 7.6 cm.
On the other side of the banknote there's a Greek woman with a basket with grapes, with a background with four columns with vines and bunches of grapes. Moreover there are two 100's, the name of the National Bank and in the lower part, the sentence Έκδοσης Πρώτα (that means first issue), all surrounded with decorative elements. This banknote has a laureate Greek young man as digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 19 cm x 8.5 cm.
On the other side of the banknote there's the same Greek woman (in different position) with one man working on fishing and one boat (left) and another man blacksmith, a train and a factory (right). Moreover there are two 1,000's, the name of the National Bank and in the lower part, the sentence Έκδοσης Πρώτα (that means first issue), all surrounded with decorative elements. This banknote has a Homer (legendary Greek author of the Iliad and the Odyssey) as digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 20.8 cm x 9.9 cm.
50 drachmai (Δραχμαι Πενήντα)
This banknote worth 50 drachmai was first circulated in September the 1st of 1935. On the main side left it can be seen a Greek peasant woman with a wad of wheat, on a background with wheat. In the right there's a gap for the digital watermark and in the center it appears the written value of the banknote and the name of the National Bank in Greek (Τραπεζα τησ Ελλαδοσ). It's compleated with two 50's in the upper corners and vegetal, fruit and floral decorative elements.On the other side of the banknote there's a laureate woman with an olive tree branch, holding the relief of Eleusis.
