Greece (1964-1978)

This serie of banknotes belongs to the period in which the king Paul I died and was replaced by Constantine II and Georgios Papandreu (of the Party of the Union of the Center) was appointed head of the Government, trying to democratize the country but resigned. In 1967 there was a coup d'etat called "Regime of the Colonels", led by Georgios Papadopoulos, canceling civil and political liberties and sending the king into exile. In 1973 the Republic was proclaimed, presided over by Papadopoulos (who fell by a coup) and then by Dimitrios Ionnidis, whose government promoted a coup d'état in Cyprus to expel President Makarios (Turkey opposed and invaded a part of the island ). This opened a period of crisis with which Karamanlis (New Democracy) was appointed head of the government, freeing political prisoners and legalizing the parties. In the 1974 elections he was re-elected and in the 1974 referendum Greece opted to continue with the Republic. Because of the attitude of NATO in the crisis of Cyprus, Greece withdrew from the alliance and in the 1977 elections, New Democracy won but lost ground in favor of the socialist PASOK (led by Andreas Papandreou). There are banknotes of 50 drachmai, 100 drachmai, 500 drachmai, 1,000 drachmai and 5,000 drachmai.
