South Africa (1966-1992)

This serie of banknotes belongs to the period in which the National Party was in government during the apartheid (segregationist and racist system of the white population on the black in South Africa), in which the country was isolated internationally until the dismantling of apartheid, which began in 1989, when there was a palatial coup by Frederik De Klerk on Pieter Botha, lifting the ban on the African National Congress (main anti-apartheid opposition party) and other leftist political organizations, and releasing Nelson Mandela after 27 years in prison and withdrawing gradually the apartheid legislation. There are banknotes of 1 rand, 2 rands, 5 rands, 10 rands, 20 rands and 50 rands.

This banknotes worth 1 rand was issued in 1966. On the main side left appears Jan van Riebeeck, Dutch colonial administrator, commander of the initial settlement in the future Cape Town. Next to him there are some proteas and in the center appears the written value of the banknote and the name of the National Bank in English (South African Reserve Bank) and in Afrikaans (Suid-Afrikaanse Reserwebank).

Moreover there are two 1's in opposite corners and decorative elements. On the other side of the banknote, it can be seen a landscape with two rams and a plow, a lemon tree and in the background a country house and mountains. There are two 1's in opposite corners and decorative elements. This banknote has Jan van Riebeeck as digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 12.8 cm x 6.4 cm.
