This serie of banknotes belongs to the period
of the history of England in
which the reform of the local system took place with the Local
Government Act of 1972 and the rebellion rate-capping of 1985 (which
sought to eliminate the ceiling of spending of the city councils), and
the period of the United Kingdom after the return of the conservatives to
the power of the hand of Edward Heath, who did not manage to stop the
economic decline of the country and was replaced in 1974 by the Laborist
Harold Wilson, in whose government the economic crisis worsened and did
not improve with his successor James Callaghan. Strict
modernization of its economy began under the controversial conservative
leader Margaret Thatcher since 1979, which liberalized the stock
markets, state industries were privatized, inflation fell during this
period and union power was reduced. However,
the strike of the miners of 1984-1985 caused the end of most of the
coal mining, replaced by the exploitation of gas and oil from the North
Sea, also at which time the IRA took the issue of Ireland from the North to Great Britain, maintaining a prolonged campaign of attacks on the British continent. After the economic boom of the 1980s, there was a brief but serious recession between 1990, when it was replaced by John Major. There are banknotes of 1 pound, 5 pounds, 10 pounds, 20 pounds and 50 pounds.
