This serie of banknotes belongs to the
period in which the conservative Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was the President
of the country till 1987 (being the first European woman in her
position), being replaced by Þorsteinn Pálsson (whose government
finished due to divergences in the coalition government), substituted by
Steingrímur
Hermannsson, from the Progressive Party. In 1991 elections the
conservative Independence Party and its leader Davíð Oddsson
(former Reykjavik's mayor) won the elections and seized power.
There are banknotes of 10 Icelandic crowns, 50 Icelandic crowns, 100
Icelandic crowns, 500 Icelandic crowns, 1,000 Icelandic crowns,
2,000 Icelandic crowns and 5,000 Icelandic crowns.
On the other side it can be seen an image of an ancient Icelandic family scene based on a drawing by Auguste Mayer based on Gaimard's travels. There is also a jug, a chest, a bowl and a sword sheath, based on articles from the National Museum and two 10's. This banknote has Jón Sigurðsson (Icelandic independence leader) as digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 13 cm x 7 cm.
10 Icelandic crowns (tíu krónur)
This banknotes worth 10 crowns was first issued in March the 29th 1961. On the main side right you can see Arngrimur Jonsson, Icelandic scholar and writer of works like Brevis commentarius de Islandia or stories about the lost saga of Skjöldunga. There are also two 10's, decorative elements (the edge is based on a bed board carved located in the National Museum), the written value of the banknote and in the left, the name of the National Bank in Icelandic (Seðlabanki Íslands).On the other side it can be seen an image of an ancient Icelandic family scene based on a drawing by Auguste Mayer based on Gaimard's travels.
