Mozambique (1961-1972)

This serie of banknotes belongs to the years during Portuguese Colonial Wars, in which Portuguese government fought against FRELIMO (a communist guerrilla), before the country's independence when Portugal went back to democracy. There are banknotes of 50 escudos, 100 escudos, 500 escudos and 1,000 escudos.

100 escudos (cem escudos)

This banknotes worth 100 escudos was first circulated in March the 27th 1961. On the main side right you can see Aires de Ornelas, a Portuguese Catholic archbishop of Goa, Portuguese colony in India. In the left part of the banknote appears a gap for the watermark. In the middle appears the written value of the banknote and the name of the National Bank in Portuguese (Banco Nacional Ultramarino, later Banco de Moçambique) and Portugal's coat of arms.
On the other side you can see the name of the of the National Bank and the written value of the banknote, as well as four 100's, one in each corner. The text says the banknote can just be used in Mozambique and, in the left part, appears the logo of the National Bank. The whole banknote is decorated with decorative elements. The digital watermark is Portuguese Mozambique's coat of arms. The size of this banknote is 16.7 cm x 9.6 cm.
