This serie of banknotes belongs to the years
of before and during WWII, in the years when Nazi Germany invaded Greece. There
are banknotes of 50 drachmai, 100 drachmai, 1,000 drachmai, 5,000 drachmai, 10,000 drachmai and 25,000 drachmai.
On the other side you can see the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea (Καταρρακται Εδεσσησ in Greek), one of the oldest Orthodox churches of Athens (11th century). In the corners there are other four 100's, it also has the name of the National Bank and 100's in the background with decorative elements. This banknote has no digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 14 cm x 7.1 cm.
This banknotes worth 1,000 drachmai was first circulated in October the 1st 1941. On the main side left you can see Alexander the Great (Μέγας Αλέξανδρος in Greek), Ancient Greek king of the kingdom of Macedonia. He created one of the largest empires of the ancient world and is widely considered one of history's most successful military commanders. In the right part appears written the value, a 1,000 and in the upper part, the name of the National Bank in Greek (Τραπεζα τηε Ελλαδοσ).
The rest of the banknote is fulled with typical Greek geometric elements and, in the corners, there are four 1,000's. On the other side you can see in the middle an image of Karanós Waterfalls (Καταρρακται Εδεσσησ), in Edessa. In the left and right there are two 1,000 surrounded with geometric elements and in the upper part, the name of the National Bank. This banknote has no digital watermark. The size of this banknote is 16.1 cm x 8.4 cm.
100 drachmai (Δραχμαι Εκατό)
This banknotes worth 100 drachmai was first circulated in July the 10th 1941. On the main side it can be seen the written value of the banknote, a 100 and the name of the National Bank in Greek (Τραπεζα τηε Ελλαδοσ). The rest of the banknote is decorated with typically Greek decorative elements (with two relieves) plus four 100's, one in each corner.On the other side you can see the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea (Καταρρακται Εδεσσησ in Greek), one of the oldest Orthodox churches of Athens (11th century).
